The Internet is an oasis of free, user-friendly resources you can use to help your business grow — don’t be afraid to explore what’s out there! We’ve learned a lot from what others have shared with us, and want to tell you about one of our favorite online tools.

Trello (trello-dot-com), a robust project management tool

You’ve probably heard of Pinterest, a social media platform that uses virtual pin boards to help users organize content. Trello operates in a similar fashion — except instead of housing your favorite recipes or DIY craft projects, your Trello boards allow you to track your projects then assign tasks, store documents and so much more. One of Trello’s most effective features is enabling multiple users to access a project board at one time. This ensures a seamlessly managed project whether you’re working in a team or individually.

How it works

Let’s say you’re responsible for producing your organization’s annual report. The screen shot below shows what your Trello board could look like, with the two light gray boxes representing the lists you’d create to organize your tasks. The white “cards” represent the tasks themselves, and you can move your cards from one list to another as you complete the tasks on each one.

Your cards also allow you to organize the specific details of each component of your project. As you can see in the next screenshot, cards are where you upload and archive current and old documents, create checklists, and assign due dates for specific tasks. If you have multiple people working on a card, the “activity” feature will track everyone’s updates and even allow you to post messages for others on your team.

Another great Trello feature is its mobile app — you can access your project updates from anywhere.

Some find it hard to move away from traditional pen-to-paper to-do lists, but we hope you find Trello helpful as you continue to prioritize and work through your 2014 projects.

By the way, nobody at Trello asked our opinion or asked us to write this. We just think it’s awesome and wanted you to check it out! We’d also love to hear from you about the tools you love.
